Powell Tuck Associates creates exemplary architecture. Designed with a fierce attention to detail for the most discerning clients, our work is brave, yet effortlessly functional.
Expert designers, encompassing architecture, interiors, product design and landscaping, our team's multi-disciplinary backgrounds make us unconventional thinkers.
We produce elegant spaces beautifully tempered by the use of honest, natural materials, and by the unexpected.
Powell Tuck Associates is a practice of architects and designers, providing architecture, interior design, furniture design and landscaping services. The practice currently employs 15 staff, with core members who have worked with the practice for up to 14 years. Our studio, in Chiswick, west London, was purpose built by us in 2003.
We take on both conversion and new build projects for individuals and developers, and work across a range of sectors, which includes residential, commercial and retail. Our conversion work often involves complex and highly technical alterations and extensions to existing buildings, many of which are listed, and our aim is to create a contemporary design that is distinct from - but in harmony with - the existing building. We always start from the premise that the new use of the building should never obliterate its past life. Externally, our buildings are designed not to give too much away and to age gracefully.
Many of our projects are in urban and Conservation Areas, which are often bound by planning restrictions and considerations and, as a result, we have very good experience of dealing with planning applications and an excellent track record for successful outcomes.
“To Powell Tuck and his team the building represents continuity, achieved through the function, between the old and the new…The exterior and the new interior come together in harmony, each respectful of the others diverse form, joined by the new function.”Vanni A Sorgentone/Italy
Founded in 1990 by Julian Powell Tuck, Powell Tuck Associates has grown as a natural evolution of Julian’s previous practice. The latter thrived during the late 1970s and 1980s, at the core of a new generation of architectural practices, and made its mark working in the heart of London’s creative scene, bringing a welcome edge to architecture and design.
The practice generated many distinct and widely acknowledged projects, including the Metropolis Recording Studios in London and Villa Zapu in California, both of which won many awards and were widely published.
Powell Tuck Associates emerged from this ethos of challenging design and architectural conventions with a strong conviction for design solutions of the highest creativity and quality of instigation. This ethos continues to be at the heart of the practice, which is now under the directorship of Adrian Lees and Angus Shepherd.
Angus and Adrian worked with Julian in the latter years of Powell Tuck Conner & Orefelt, and stayed with Julian when the new practice was founded. The strength of this association, and the collective experience gained through many collaborations, gives the practice a unique quality and cohesion.
